My Age of Anxiety: Fear, Hope, Dread, and the Search for Peace of Mind, by Scott Stossel

A Washington Post Notable BookA Seattle Times Best Book of the YearDrawing on his own longstanding battle with anxiety, Scott Stossel presents a moving and revelatory account of a condition that affects some 40 million Americans. Stossel offers an intimate and authoritative history of efforts by scientists, philosophers, and writers to understand anxiety. We discover the well-known who have struggled with the condition, as well as the afflicted generations of Stossel's own family. Revealing anxiety's myriad manifestations and the anguish it causes, he also surveys the countless psychotherapies, medications, and often outlandish treatments that have been developed to relieve it.         Stossel vividly depicts anxiety’s human toll—its crippling impact, its devastating power to paralyze. He also explores how individual sufferers—including himself—have managed and controlled symptoms. By turns erudite and compassionate, amusing and inspirational, My Age of Anxiety is the essential account of a pervasive and too often misunderstood affliction.

This is a wonderfully written book on not only the author's own struggle with high anxiety, but on anxiety itself. I found this book to be very helpful and encouraging, and very interesting. The author is very brave in writing in such detail about his lifelong struggle with anxiety. He writes about anxiety with deep knowledge and compassion, and even with humor. A great book, and if you and/or a loved one or friend are struggling with anxiety, you will learn a lot.

Honest, frank, clear. This author is " my-kind-a-guy"!!! He discusses in detail the many meds out there waiting for all of us when we have a twinge of anxiety, depression, fear and makes sense out of it, telling us there is NO magic pill. It's a matter of trying one or all and hoping you find the combo that works. And since I had no idea there were people among us that are so struck down by anxiety every day of their lives, in the way he describes, I was relieved that my little bouts of it, (little by comparison) were all I had to tolerate. The talent that the author brings to the story is his light handed, comical, tongue-in-cheek presentation that allows the reader to walk with him hand in hand without being dismayed and depressed about the futility of it all. Great read.

Stossel's book is an exhaustive journey through the history and science relating to anxiety disorders. The history is fascinating, and the science far-ranging, but the bottom line is that Stossel demonstrates both in his review of recent science and his own family history that anxiety disorders are genetic. The rest is fascinating filler.I doubt the book could have been nearly so convincing or educational had his amazingly personal, embarrassing and painful experience been left out and the evidence presented as a dispassionate survey of the literature.Stossel has done sufferers a great service.

This author is a very brave individual. He lays bare his agonizing life-long history of anxiety, and in the process, I'm sure he has helped countless sufferers who are either afraid, embarrassed or ashamed to admit to this disorder. The book is thoroughly researched and discusses the historical views of anxiety and its treatment through the ages.. One of the best aspects of the book is the detailed scientific explanation of the probable causes of anxiety---in large part, heredity, and physical (brain) and neurochemical factors totally beyond the person's control. Mr. Stossel's book demonstrates that suffering anxiety does NOT mean you are weak, or a coward. This is one of the most revealing and fascinating books I've read in a very long time.

This book is highly recommend to those that have overcome and are living with an anxiety disorder. This book provides those with an anxiety disorder the information that they need to recover.

In the first couple chapters the author establishes his bon fides by bravely sharing some stories of exacly how his anxieties and phobias have affected his life. The anecdotes are not easy to read through, but if you persevere past this introduction you will find a well-researched study of anxiety though the ages, looked at through the often-contradictory lenses of genetics, pharmacology, psychology, societal forces, and the influence of family. The book is essentially a textbook on the subject written for a popular audience. If you have had experience with anxiety, know someone who does, or want to better understand the age we live in, you will find this an excellent book.

Scott Stossel has done a wonderful job of describing his difficulties with anxiety and also interwoven a history about man's understanding of anxiety and its treatment.Together, this makes for an interesting read for those of us interested in the mind, neuroscience, psychology, philosophy and more. For those that are looking for a "pat" ending, this book does not offer such. But that's the nature of what we know about the mind.It is obvious that Scott "gets this," and has achieved a "working acceptance" and therefore achieves a level of transcendence that provides profound meaning to Scott's life.I wish him the very best!

I have multiple people in my life who suffer from anxiety and have been personally thankful not to have this affliction. It was not an easy read because of all the medical research and explanation but it certainly gives one deeper insight into a very complicated condition. I am saddened we don't know more about our minds and how to relieve them and that in spite of all the studies we cannot scientifically prove cause and effect. Scott's willingness to share his intimate experiences is a help to others to know they are not alone and should not be viewed any differently than someone who has an illness like high blood pressure or cancer. He is to be commended for striving to help himself and others meet the challenges of chemical imbalance.
